Precise Thickness Measurement

Our customer needed to measure the thickness of a foam product with an accuracy to better than 1/10,000 of an inch (0.0001 inch). Since the foam itself is compressible, the measurement had to be made under very specific conditions.

We designed a machine that smoothly applies a very precise and even pressure to the surface of the foam. The machine then uses a laser to measure the thickness of the compressed foam. Since the laser can not measure the foam directly, our machine measures the distance to a very thin disc that rests upon the foam.

In order to achieve the desired accuracy, we mechanically decoupled the laser system support from the mechanism that applies the force and from all other items whose weight, vibration or movement might influence the reading.
